Remembering the Dead

like sleeping
by carla, nsw

I remember i was woken up by my garndfather's nurse. She told me he had rested... "rested" I thought.. I couldn't understand what she meant.

"He rested" she repeated and now you have to tell your mother...

I realised what she was talking about and went to his room to see...

He was like asleep...he was still warm and I couldn't help feel sorry for him but peace at the same time... I was so glad he passed away in his sleep and I kept thinking he died just minutes ago... maybe 20, maybe 30 minutes I dont know... I touched his hands and feet His face and hands were cold but inside his hands he was still warm.

We all helped change my granfather to his favorite clothes. He was stiff and it was hard to bend him we sat to his side and I hold his hand between mine as if trying to warm it up...
